Medical Examiner Reveals Joan Rivers’ Official Cause of Death

The official cause of death for the late comedian Joan Rivers has been released by the New York City Medical Examiner.

Joan Rivers passed away on September 4th at the age of 81 while she was undergoing a throat procedure in New York City to evaluate changes in her voice and to address her acid reflux symptoms. The New York City Medical Examiner has finally revealed that Ms. Rivers’ death was due to the lack of oxygen to the brain.

The New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner issued the following statement: “OCME has completed its investigation. The cause of Ms. Rivers’ death is anoxic encephalopathy due to hypoxic arrest during laryngoscopy and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy with propofol sedation for evaluation of voice changes and gastroesophageal reflux disease. The manner of death is therapeutic complication.”

The medical examiner further explained that “the classification of a death as a therapeutic complication means that the death resulted from a predictable complication of medical therapy.”

Joan’s daughter, Melissa Rivers, released a statement on Facebook following the medical coroners report saying, “In response to today’s release of the New York City Medical Examiner’s report, we continue to be saddened by our tragic loss and grateful for the enormous outpouring of love and support from around the world. We have no further comment at this time.”

Joan Rivers was in show business for over 60 years and will be remembered as a legendary comedian.
