‘Jetsons’ Actress Janet Waldo Dies At 96

Known for voicing Judy Jetson on the 60s animated series The Jetsons, Janet Waldo has passed away at the age of 96 at her longtime home in Encino.

The Yakima, Washington native’s daughter, Lucy Lee, confirmed that the star passed away Sunday morning (June 12th). In 2011, Waldo was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor and “had been bed-bound for many months,” explained Lee.

Along with voicing Judy on the series (from 1962 to 1987), the actress was also known for voicing a plethora of other cartoon characters, which included: Josie McCoy on Josie and the Pussycats, Penelope Pitstop on The Perils of Penelope Pitstop and Wacky Races, Granny Sweet on the Precious Pupp segments of The Atom Ant Show, Morticia Addams on the short-lived animated adaptation of The Addams Family, the witch Hogatha on The Smurfs, Lana Lang on Superman and several characters on The Flintstones.

During an interview with MovieWeb in February, Waldo opened up about working on The Jetsons, saying, “I think The Jetsons‘ influence has been so tremendous on young people who have let their imaginations go and have become intrigued with inventing new things. There’s always something new and every time it happens I think, ‘Hey, we did that on The Jetsons.’”

“I think that is the true appeal of The Jetsons,” she continued. “The technology. It intrigued so many people. I hope that flying car really happens.”

Waldo is survived by two children, Lee and Jonathan Barlow Lee. Her husband, actor Robert E. Lee (Inherit the Wing, Auntie Mame), passed away in 1994 at the age of 75.
