The White House lifted restrictions for fully vaccinated international travelers beginning Nov. 8, according to a White House official. The new policy will apply to both land borders and air travel.

Restrictions on non-essential travelers first went into effect when the COVID-19 pandemic began rapidly spreading in March 2020. The restrictions started with China before eventually expanding to more than 30 countries.

The White House announced in late September that it would remove restrictions from 33 countries including China, India, Brazil and most of Europe at the beginning of November.

Non-U.S. air travelers will need to show proof of vaccination and will need to show proof of a recent negative COVID-19 test before boarding a flight. International visitors crossing a land border will not be required to show proof of a recent negative COVID-19 test.

The White House also announced Tuesday that it would lift restrictions at land borders and ferry crossings with Canada and Mexico for fully vaccinated travelers beginning in early November. Canada on Aug. 9 approved international travel for non-essential travelers coming from the United States.
