SUV Plows into Christmas Parade, Killing 5

An SUV drove into a crowd of bystanders during a Christmas parade in a Waukesha, Wisconsin Sunday, killing at least five and injuring as many as 40 people. Several children are also among those who were hit by the vehicle.

CNN reported that the suspect appeared to have been fleeing another scene when they drove through the parade, citing law enforcement sources. Police Chief Dan Thompson informed reporters that one suspect was in custody as well as a sport utility vehicle that was recovered after the incident. Authorities said the number of deaths and injuries could change.

Videos circulating on social media reveal a red SUV speeding alongside then into the parade, running over more than a dozen spectators before the crowds dispersed for the sidewalks. Another video shows officers firing at the vehicle in an attempt to stop it. Police do not believe shots were being fired from the vehicle, according to Thompson.

The local CBS affiliate shared a photo on Twitter of what appeared to be the red SUV with its hood crumpled and fender hanging off, parked in a driveway.

There has been no established connection between the incident and Friday’s not-guilty verdict in the Kyle Rittenhouse trial, who was charged with the killing of two men and injuring another during a protest in Kenosha, Wisconsin. There also has been no connection to terrorism, according to law enforcement sources.

White House spokesperson Jen Psaki said President Joe Biden had been briefed on the situation and federal officials were offering assistance.

“Our hearts are with the families and the entire community,” she said in a post on Twitter on Monday.

Schools will remain closed on Monday in Waukesha and additional counselors will be available for students, the district superintendent of schools said.
