Netflix buys the entire Roald Dahl catalog, giving them an important foothold in the current streaming platform war. Matilda. Charlie And The Cholocate Factory. James And The Giant Peach. These are just a few classic children’s stories that have found a new home. This marks Netflix‘s biggest content purchase to date.
What’s The Deal?
The Works of Roald Dahl
Previously, Netflix struck a deal to license 16 various titles from the RDSC (Roald Dahl Story Company). Now, they will control the rights of the stories as well in a deal that nets the Dahl family just north of $680M. Netflix is slightly behind Disney+ in the “child development and entertainment” section of content, and this acquisition will help bolster their offerings.

Netflix has committed to nearly $1 billion dollars during their current licensing deal, with that number set to grow over the next few years. The first projects under the new acquisition will be a new adaptation of the popular musical Matilda, and a TV show inside the world of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory directed by Taika Waititi.
The managing director of RDSC stated that there are plans for 19 projects including various movies, “live experiences”, TV shows, stage shows, and more.
