News broke that Genera+ion will not be returning to HBO Max for a second season claimed by the Hollywood Reporter. Unfortunately, the LGBTQ- themed high-school dramedy ends with their first season finale as their last.
Initially, the show launched in March with expectation to go further. Executive producer Lena Dunham contributed to Zelda Barnz’s vision. Barnz (aged 19) created the story with her father, screenwriter Daniel Branz. Despite her personal experiences in high school, Barnz was determined to portray a typical teenager’s life. Consequently, she created a modern day story about sexuality in hopes to impact the film industry.

The story follows a group of high school misfits exploring their sexuality. However, conflicts arise in their conservative community. Life, love and family beliefs are tested and mayhem follows in an ever-shifting world. Undoubtedly, Zelda’s unique vision had intriguing perspectives of LGBTQ teenagers. Sadly, more seasons were expected. The cast includes Justice Smith, Chase Sui Wonders and Uly Schlesinger. In addition, Chloe East, Nava Mau and Lukita Maxwell as well as Haley Sanchez, Nathanya Alexander and Martha Plimpton star in the show.
HBO Max’s Statement
“We will not be moving forward with a second season of Genera+ ion- We are very proud to have partnered with Zelda and Daniel Barnz to faithfully and authentically represent LGBTQ youth with such a diverse group of characters and layered stories. We thank them and our wonderfully gifted cast for all their hard work and collaboration,” an HBO Max spokesperson said in a statement.
The Upbringing of ‘Genera+ion’
The Barnz family intended to executive produce the series for their aspiring writer daughter. As a result, Zelda interned and lived with Girls creator Lena Dunham. Eventually, Dunham helped Zelda with her story as she executive produced HBO’s Industry in Wales.
This is HBO Max’s first original show cancelled. Nonetheless, the streamer continues to have a film slate lined up. Some of those include the Gossip Girl update, The Flight Attendant, Hacks, Love, Life, Made for Love and Raised by Wolves.
