Tony Bennett: “Legalize All Drugs”

After Tony Bennett’s Grammy win for his duet with the late Amy Winehouse  for  best traditional pop vocal album for “Duets II,” the singer has stood by his statement to have all drugs legalized.

The legendary icon, who has previously battled an addiction with cocaine, is getting mostly positive reviews for his comments.  Bennett told told Rolling Stone that legalization would “get rid of all the gangsters that make people hide. One thing I’ve learned about young people, when you say ‘Don’t do this,’ that’s the one thing they’re going to try and do. Once it’s legal and everybody can do it, there is no longer the desire to do something that nobody else can do.”

The 17-time Grammy winner went on to say, “I witnessed that in Amsterdam. It’s legal, and as a result there’s no panic in the streets. There’s no deals, there’s no ‘Meet me at the corner and I’ll give you something.’ You’re always afraid you’re going to get arrested. You have to hide. Why do that?”

Would this concept work?

One thing is for certain, something needs to be done with the drug addiction in Hollywood.  Whether it’s prescription drugs, like the ones that resulted in the death of Michael Jackson, alcohol that took the lives of Amy Winehouse and Jani Lane or  “hard drugs” that recently took the lives of Billy Mays and Weezer’s Mikey Welsh, something must be done.

Do you think legalizing all drugs would fix the US drug problem?  Voice your opinion below!
