‘Succession’ Renewed for Fourth Season

Succession was renewed for a fourth season by HBO, according to the network. The hit series is barely in its third season after the second episode aired last Sunday evening.

Succession is HBO’s most popular show, filling in the power vacuum that was left behind in Game of Thrones‘ departure in 2019. Its season three premiere drew in more than 1.4 million viewers across all platforms, making it the most-watched debut of any original series in the HBO Max era. The family drama has also seen an increase in viewership by 13% since its season two premiere.

HBO Programming’s Executive Vice President Francesca Orsi praised the show and the success it has wrought. “With each season of Succession, Jesse Armstrong has continued to surpass our wildest expectations, pulling us deeper into the Roy family’s inner sanctum with indelible wit, humanity, and precision,” said Orsi. “This season is undoubtedly no exception, and we couldn’t be more excited for all that’s in store in this next season ahead.”

Succession season three picked up right where season two left off with the Roy family scattering for cover after Kendall Roy (Jeremy Strong) placed his father Logan Roy (Brian Cox) at the center of a legal nightmare. The entire family, made up of Siobhan “Shiv” Roy (Sarah Snook), Roman Roy (Kieran Culkin) and half-sibling Connor Roy (Alan Ruck) are pulled even deeper into a vicious family civil war over who will succeed Logan as CEO of Waystar/Royco. That is, of course, if the company survives the U.S. Department of Justice.

“Endgame” in Sight

There have been rumbles about the show nearing its end. In an interview with GQ UK, Cox said he could see there being possibly another two seasons before the show hangs it up, but admitted the “endgame” could be reached within only one season.

“It depends what the writers feel. I know they’ve got an endgame. They haven’t told us what the ending is, but there is an endgame. So it’s just how they get up to that endgame, whether it takes one series or two series,” said Cox.

Writer Georgia Pritchett told The Sunday Times, “I think the maximum would be five seasons, but possibly more like four,” she told the newspaper. “At this point [Executive Producer Jesse Armstrong] is saying only one more. But that happens every time. We’ve got a good end in sight.”
