American Idol Winner Ruben Studdard Visits Houston

HOUSTON – Singer Ruben Studdard, the winner of the second season of FOX television show “American Idol,” will be among the entertainers who will take part in the Mayor’s Holiday Celebration at Houston City Hall.

Studdard has released four albums since winning “American Idol” and was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2003.

Grammy Award-winning singer-pianist Diane Schuur and Studdard will be the featured performers during the celebration, which begins at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2 and will end at 8 p.m.

The celebration will also include a visit from Santa Claus, fireworks and the lighting of a 67-foot-tall white fir tree with energy-efficient LED bulbs. Ernest Walker will direct the Mayor’s Official Holiday Band together with the Abundant Life Cathedral, and Gospel Music Heritage choirs as they perform the Hallelujah Chorus from “Handel’s Messiah” during the tree lighting.

“I invite my fellow Houstonians to join me at City Hall to continue this 92-year tradition of beginning the holiday season with friends and family and ignite our famous skyline with music, lights and fireworks,” said Mayor Annise Parker.

Other performers at the celebration will include the singing group Savvy from the television show “The Wannabes,” the Humphreys School of Musical Theatre and the Gingerbread People from Puppet Pizzazz. All four members of Savvy are from Texas.

Everyone is encouraged to bring a new unwrapped toy to one of the Reliant Energy booths at the Mayor’s Holiday Celebration to benefit the Salvation Army Greater Houston Area Command through Dec. 9. Anyone who donates a toy will receive a light-up Santa hat from Reliant Energy.
