Lady Gaga Drops Stage Name For ‘A Star Is Born’

Reading the official press release regarding the start of production on Warner Bros. Pictures’ A Star is Born it’s interesting to note that the first sentence let’s it be known that music superstar Lady Gaga will be going by her real name, Stefani Germanotta. This is Stefani’s first leading role in a motion picture and she’ll be starring alongside Bradley Cooper, who is also helming the pic in his directorial debut.

The film is being shot entirely in Southern California and the two stars are currently at the music festival Coachella doing a few sequences.

In A Star is Born Cooper is Jackson Maine, a country music star who is on the brink of decline when he discovers a talented unknown named Ally (Germanotta). As the two begin a passionate love affair, Jack coaxes Ally into the spotlight, catapulting her to stardom. But as Ally’s career quickly eclipses his own, Jack finds it increasingly hard to handle his fading glory.

This project had previously attracted the likes of Clint Eastwood and Beyonce Knowles, but I’m curious to see how Bradley Cooper handles directing duties for the first time. As for Germanotta, who used her stage name when performing on FX’s American Horror Story, not only is she the lead actress, she will also be composing and performing original tracks. Last year, Germanotta earned an Oscar nomination for the song “Til It Happens to You” from The Hunting Ground.

A Star is Born is based on William Wellman’s original 1937 movie. It has been remade twice already (1954 with Judy Garland; 1976 with Barbra Streisand). In addition to Cooper and Germanotta, the principle cast will include Andrew Dice Clay and Sam Elliott.

A Star is Born will be released September 28, 2018.
