First Look: Kathryn Bigelow’s ‘Detroit’

Nearly fifty years before the events of Ferguson, Missouri and the #BlackLivesMatter movement, the city of Detroit played host to civil unrest in the summer of 1967. The Michigan metropolis was the setting for one of the darkest moments in U.S. history involving a clash of both race and military.

Academy Award winner Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty) is back with Detroit, a based-on-a-true-story account of five days of civil unrest. Bigelow reteams with screenwriter Mark Boal and she has gathered a talented ensemble that includes John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Jacob Latimore (Collateral Beauty), Will Poulter (We’re the Millers), Jeremy Strong (The Big Short), John Krasinski, and Anthony Mackie among others.

Detroit opens in theaters on August 4th.
