‘The Goldbergs’ 1990s Spinoff In The Works

The Television Critics Association winter press tour is in full effect as networks big and small showcase upcoming and future projects. CBS has been promoting the likes of The Good Fight (the Good Wife spin-off), Training Day starring Bill Paxton, and a new legal drama titled Doubt. Its premium sister station, Showtime, has a new season of Billions on the way plus Guerilla developed by John Ridley (American Crime). And of course we can’t forget about the return of Twin Peaks. Hopefully that panel discussion came with a slice of pie and a damn fine cup of coffee.

But what has piqued my interest is Adam F. Goldberg, creator of ABC’s The Goldbergs, teasing a spin-off set in the 1990s.

The series would continue to be set at the William Penn Charter school, the same institution the three Goldberg siblings attend on the hit ABC comedy. Potential is there for characters on The Goldbergs to cross over on the show. According to Goldberg, Beverly (Wendi McLendon-Covey) is in the pilot script.

As to what the 1990s series will entail, it will continue the same single-camera format with accompanying voiceover. Only instead of an older Adam Goldberg it will be the voice of a teacher.

“For me, every show that’s about teachers, and there’s been a number of them, they’re like misfits who hate the kids and don’t want to be there and hate their jobs. For me, having crazy parents, my teachers were the sane people who raised me and they liked being there. They don’t make a ton of money, but they’re heroes. And I wanted to wish a positive show where it’s not having teachers being down in the teacher’s lounge smoking cigarettes.” – Adam Goldberg

Still no word on what the spinoff will be titled.
