Jonah Hill Talks Playing Arms Dealer in ‘War Dogs’

War Dogs, a crime war comedy film that is based on a true story, follows the story of two men, David Packouz and Efraim Diveroli, who were arms dealers in their early 20s and struck a deal to supply weapons to the Afghan Military. Miles Teller and Jonah Hill star as Packouz and Diveroli, respectively, and BackstageOL’s Dave Morales chatted with them about their roles in the film.

For Hill, playing a real life character who is still alive wasn’t new to him, as he’s done it before for multiple films.

“This is like my fifth or sixth person that is a real person and still alive so it’s interesting,” Hill said of playing Diveroli. “It’s different every time, depending on the person you’re playing, and how much they do or don’t want a movie made about their lives…It’s always different and interesting. You just try and do the best job you can to kind of service the director and what they want in their vision for the movie.”

Teller added that the real Packouz is even in the film.

“David [Packouz] was on set,” Teller revealed. “He’s actually the guy in the nursing home. He’s playing the guitar. He’s playing ‘(Don’t Fear) the Reaper.’”

War Dogs hits theaters this Friday, August 19.
