Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator Genisys and Channing Tatum’s Magic Mike XXL are competing for the top spot at the box office this weekend, with both movies predicted to hit at least $40 million over the five days, according to analysts.
The films opened Wednesday in the $9.5 million to $10 million range, which include Tuesday night preview showings. Warner Bros.’ Magic Mike XXL collected $2.4 million Tuesday evening, putting it slightly ahead of the $2.3 million opening for Paramount-Skydance’s Terminator Genisys.
Forecasters are predicting for Terminator Genisys to finish with roughly $55 million at 3,600 locations, while Magic Mike XXL will round out the weekend around $40 million at 3,355 theaters.
The initial Magic Mike successfully took in $39 million on its first weekend and finished with a $113 million total. In the R-rated sequel, the group of friends – Tatum, Joe Manganiello, Matt Bomer, Kevin Nash and Adam Rodriguez – road-trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C. to perform at a stripper convention. Currently, the film holds a positive 59 percent “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while Terminator Genisys has a 25 percent “fresh” score from critics.
Costing $155 million to produce, Alan Taylor’s Terminator Genisys is the fifth installment in the fan-favorite sci-fi franchise, with reports of a sixth and seventh installment already in talks. The film follows Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney), who is sent back to 1984 by John Connor (Jason Clarke) to protect Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke) and safeguard the future. An unexpected turn of events creates a fractured timeline, leading Reese, Connor and a Terminator ally (Schwarzenegger) on a mission to reset the future.
The two new films will compete against tentpole holdovers Jurassic World and Inside Out. The dinosaur action film surpassed the $500 million domestic mark on Sunday, while Inside Out crossed $200 million on Tuesday.
