The NFL is reportedly asking potential halftime show acts to pay to perform at the 2015 Super Bowl XLIX in Arizona this year.
Millions tune in every year to watch the Super Bowl, but a majority also tune in to watch their favorite bands perform during the halftime show. Although it has not been officially announced who will be performing at this year’s Super Bowl XLIX halftime show, potential halftime acts may be asked by the NFL to pay-to play in exchange for the high-profile gig.
Last year Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers performed at the 2014 Super Bowl halftime show and drew a record 115.3 million viewers, according to a Nielsen report. This year’s potential halftime show candidates have been narrowed down to Rihanna, Katy Perry, and Coldplay, but NFL spokeswoman Joanna Hunter said the league’s contracts with the potential performers are confidential and that their only goal is “to put on the best possible show.”
It is unclear how much the NFL may be asking halftime performers to pay if they get the halftime show spot, but decisions may be announced as early as September.
