Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack dominates the Billboard 200 this week. The 12-song multi-artist collection stormed up the albums chart on Wednesday, Aug. 13, bumping last week’s champion Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers’ Hypnotic Eye down to No. 6 with 109,000 copies sold, and becoming the second chart-topping soundtrack of 2014.
This year marks the first time in five years that multiple theatrical film soundtracks have reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200. In 2009, the soundtracks to Hannah Montana: The Movie, The Twilight Saga: New Moon and Michael Jackson’s This Is It topped the list.
Disney Music Group has released both of 2014’s chart-topping soundtracks. The company’s Hollywood Records issued the Guardians of the Galaxy disc while Walt Disney Records released the soundtrack to Disney’s Frozen, which topped the chart back in January.
The Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack, subtitled Awesome Mix Vol. 1, is the first soundtrack composed entirely of previously released songs to rule the Billboard 200. All of its tracks were released between the late 1960s and late 1970s, and most were chart hits on the Billboard Hot 100.
