Brazil vs. Germany Sets Twitter Records

The Brazil vs. Germany semifinal match in the 2014 World Cup on Tuesday was a shocking one, with Germany completely crushing Brazil 7-1. The blowout prompted numerous jokes and memes across social media.  It was all people could talk about on Twitter, making it the most-discussed single sports game ever.

Twitter announced Wednesday that there were 35.6 million tweets posted about the match, which was more than the amount of tweets for this year’s Super Bowl with 24.9 million. As for other matches in this World Cup, the previously most-tweeted-about games were Brazil vs. Chile in the Round of 16 with 16.4 million tweets and the opening match of Brazil vs. Croatia with 12.2 million tweets.

The stunning match also set another Twitter record with tweets per minute. There were 580,166 tweets per minute when Sami Khedira scored for Germany, bringing the score to 0-5 in the first 30 minutes of the match. Toni Kroos’ 4-0 goal was the second most-tweeted moment of the game with 508,601 tweets per minute, followed by his 3-0 goal with 497,425 tweets per minute.
