Hugh Laurie Sings!
It’s new music time!
Lil Wayne SHOULD top the charts from last week’s releases. Interesting fact, Wayne’s total sales have DOUBLED those of the Jay Z/Kanye West “Watch The Throne”. Wow.
New choices this week include Hugh Laurie (yes, the actor), George Strait and Lindsey Buckingham, of Fleetwood Mac fame.
Hugh Laurie “Let Them Talk”
The star of the hit Fox tv show “House” releases his debut album. If you are like me, you probably didn’t even know he sang. He does, and very well.
The album is a New Orleans style blues collection with songs produced by Joe Henry. His band of musicians on this debut album include artists that have worked with the likes of Greg Allman, Robert Plant, kd lang, T-Bone Burnett, Alison Krause and John Legend.
Over in the UK, Laurie is known for his musical and comedic styling in addition to his dramatic acting. Here in the States, we now get to learn more about Laurie’s musical skills.
George Strait “Here For A Good Time”
This is Strait’s 39th studio album. When you are a Country Music Hall of Famer and you have 88 career singles, what’s next? How about an 89th single?
The title track, “Here For A Good Time”, was written by Strait, his son Bubba and legendary songwriter Dean Dillon. “Here For A Good Time” is also Strait’s second highest debut single on the Hot Country Songs chart.
Strait co-produced the album with longtime friend Tony Brown.
Lindsey Buckingham “Seeds We Sow”
This is Buckingham’s sixth solo release.
As the frontman of the legendary group Fleetwood Mac, Buckingham earned a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Buckingham has described this new album, an album that almost didn’t get made, like this:
“I think it came from a certain residue of momentum that was left over from the three years I did those two solo albums back to back and toured a lot behind both of them. That was such a great experience, just finally allowing myself to do that. So I grew a lot during those three years and then of course we went on the road with Fleetwood Mac and did just the opposite, which was to go out and tour without any album at all. And that was sort of freeing because you come to terms with the fact that at a certain point people don’t necessarily want to hear anything too new from Fleetwood Mac. All the energy that I took from those three years and the confidence I took out of that three-year experience with those two albums got reapplied to Fleetwood Mac and it helped me to infuse a higher level into that music.”
That’s deep.
As BackstageOL previously reported (click here to read the story), Fleetwood Mac has announced they will also return with a new tour (and possibly an album) next year. Says Buckingham, “”We’re doing something for sure. I wouldn’t be shocked if it was a tour and possibly an album. We’ll have to wait and see. Nothing is on the books right now. With Fleetwood Mac, there’s a lot of landmines out there politically and it’s hard to get everybody on the same page at the same time – but I think this might be one of those years where everyone will want to do the same thing. Whatever that is.”
Let’s hope so.
Buckingham is launching a solo tour across America to support this new album. He says the live show will include new songs, hits and some Fleetwood Mac songs.
“People would probably run me out on a rail if I didn’t do a few Fleetwood Mac songs,” he says. “We’ll do ‘Big Love,’ ‘Never Going Back Again,’ ‘Tusk’ and we gotta do ‘Go Your Own Way.’ That’s about it though.”
