Yup, it’s happening! The long awaited sequel to the classic 1985 adventure-comedy The Goonies is finally underway.Director Richard Donner announced earlier this month that “we’re doing a sequel,” and now it has been revealed that Steven Spielberg wrote the storyline for the sequel.
“Hopefully we’re going to get this done, period. Spielberg came up with the idea of doing a sequel after 30 years,” Donner reveals. “You don’t do it without him, and he came up with another storyline and he’s right on.” The whole Goonies storyline has been Spielberg’s brainchild since the beginning. The Academy Award-winning director wrote the storyline, produced and worked as a second unit director on the 1985 classic.
Donner hopes that entire cast of the Goonies will return for the sequel. All of the film’s cast have revealed in previous interviews that they would like to return for the sequel, including Josh Brolin.
There’s no word on what the new storyline is about, but the last attempt at a script followed the sons and daughters of the original cast going on a new adventure of their own. Hopefully, Donner and Spielberg will be able to talk Chris Columbus into joining the crew and penning a new script for the sequel.
