Starting next week, Wal-Mart will be expanding its current online trade-in program by allowing customers to trade in gently used video games at 3,100 Wal-Mart stores.
The value of each trade in will vary by title, console, and age of the game. Prices are expected to range from a few dollars for older games to $35 or more for newer titles. Like GameStop, customers who trade in video games will be allotted store credit that may be redeemed at both Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club stores. What sets Wal-Mart’s trade-in policy apart from GameStop’s is that the in-store credit received can be used on anything in the store, not just other video games.
The games collected through trade-ins will be refurbished and then sold online and stores with a “certified pre-owned” label on the packaging. Wal-Mart expects to have a solid inventory of secondhand games available for sale this summer.
