Interviews

Meet Chef Robert Irvine!

The headline actually means a lot more than meets the eye. Yes, this is an interview piece, BUT you also have a chance to hang with the star of The Food Network’s wildly popular show “Restaurant Impossible.” You also get a chance to do something special for the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Houston.

Robert Irvine and I were scheduled to talk midday but he was catching a plane headed off to another tour stop. I get the feeling this guy never stops. That’s not a bad thing, he loves it.

Me: “Do you ever just take a break? I mean you have several shows you work on and even more in development?”

Irvine: (Laughs) “Haha…no not really. But I love it! Hey- I’m actually getting off a plane right now…can I call you back in an hour?”

Me: “Sure.”

Now, normally when a famous person does this I NEVER expect a call back. And, if I do get one, it’s never even close to when they said they would.

One hour later, my phone rings.

Irvine: “Hey…sorry about that..let’s talk!”

I was in shock.

Me: “Wow…you are a prompt one. Awesome. Ok. So what it is like when you walk in a restaurant? Does everyone get nervous?”

Irvine: (Laughs again) “Yes. No, not really. I’m not there to judge anyone, just have a great experience like anyone else.”

This guy is REALLY down to earth.

Me: “What motivates you?”

Irvine: “I love what I do and I love (even more) doing things for others. Whether it’s through the shows or  special events, I really enjoy it. A lot. Which is why I am excited to be coming to Houston for such a great cause with the Boys & Girls Club.”

Ok….Robert Irvine is REALLY cool.

Me: “Awesome. I know a lot of people are looking forward to getting the chance to meet you and  just ‘hang.’ I’ve got to ask- what does Robert Irvine order when he goes in to a new restaurant?”

Irvine: “Something new…something different. I’m not afraid of trying something I’ve never heard of.”

I interrupt.

Me: “I am. In fact…terrified is the word .”

Irvine: (Laughs again) “Don’t be. I think dining out is a fantastic experience that shouldn’t be the same every time.”

I agree.

Robert Irvine will be in Houston Thursday September 5 at the Hilton Post Oak – 2100 Post Oak Blvd., Houston, TX 77056- for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston’s 25th Annual Great Futures Dinner.

The Great Futures Dinner serves as the organization’s premiere, annual event to raise critical funds to support the overall mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston.  Last year, this event raised more than $575,000 for the Clubs.  All proceeds will be used to fund the Clubs’ core program areas that include Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyles, and Good Character & Citizenship.
