UPDATE : “Kai” was arrested this afternoon and charged with murder. He was apprehended at a Philadelphia bus terminal and is being held on $3 million bail.
Kai the Hitchhiker, who become an internet star after a television news report went viral last February, is wanted for the murder of 73-year-old attorney Joseph Galfy who was found dead in his home Monday night from blunt force trauma.
Kai, real name Caleb Lawrence McGillivary, was hailed as a hero after using his hatchet to stopped a crazed driver from continually running over and attacking a PG&E employee in Fresno this past February. A local news report of an interview with Kai went viral and the homeless hitchhiker made appearances on several national shows such as Jimmy Kimmel Live. Now he’s wanted for murder.
The Union County homicide task force issued a warrant for Kai’s arrest after an autopsy confirmed that death of 73-year-old attorney Joseph Galfy was cause by blunt force trauma. Union County prosecutor spokesman John Holl could not reveal how McGillivary, aka. Kai, is connected to the slaying.
On Tuesday, May 14, Kai posted a message on his Facebook page claiming he was drugged and raped.
According to police, Kai has likely cut his hair in order to change his appearance. He was last seen at a light rail station in Haddonfield, N.J. and is considered armed and dangerous.
Authorities are offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to his capture.
