Apple surpassed a major milestone on Wednesday when the company announced its iTunes Store has sold over 25 billion downloads since its inception in 2003. The online media store will celebrate it’s tenth birthday on April 28th this year.
The milestone occurred when Phillip Lupke of Germany purchased the song “Monkey Drums (Goksel Vancin Remix)” by British DJ and producer Chase Buch.
Never heard of the song? We haven’t either.
Luckily for Phillip, he managed to download the song at the perfect time and was rewarded with a 10,000-Euro ($13,528) iTunes gift card from Apple.
Other iTunes milestones include:
- 25 millionth song — “Let It Snow! Let It Snow!” Frank Sinatra, 2003
- 100 millionth — “Somersault (Danger Mouse remix),” by English electronica band Zero 7, 2004
- 500 millionth — “Mississippi Girl,” Faith Hill, 2005
- 1 billionth — “Speed of Sound,” Coldplay, 2006
- 10 billionth — “Guess Things Happen That Way,” Johnny Cash, 2010
25 billion songs purchased roughly averages out to 2.5 song for every person on earth, although some have obviously purchased more songs than others.
The most popular song purchased on iTunes is “White Christmas” with over 100 million download sold worldwide while Michael Jackson’s Thriller is the most popular album with 42 million online sales.
With over 26 million songs available to over 400 million active users worldwide, there’s a little bit of everything for any musical taste out there.
